And with good reason, because the second he decides to disobey, he finds himself in big trouble.īoo’s Bad Day is a great bed time story for parents to read to their little ones, and even for beginning readers. Even though Boo believes he’s ready to take on the world, he is forbidden to leave the house by his humans. I recently had the privilege to review Penny Lockwood’s newest children’s book, “Boo’s Bad Day” a story about taking on more than you can handle.īoo is an adorable house kitten who’s never ventured outside before. You know the time before we had bills, responsibilities, and worries. Sure, I pretend that I do so for research purposes, but it’s not true, not by a long shot! Children’s books take me back to that simpler time before the world got complicated. I’ll admit it, I’m an adult and I still read children’s books.

The power of reading past LGBT+ voices today is that it ensures that history is enjoyed and continually reinterpreted. The LGBT+ community has made monumental progress and to strengthen this fought confidence we have to actively discover our own history – true, provocative and unburdening. For us to read and listen to these largely unheard voices, reading to learn more deeply about the past. Good literature helps us step into each other’s shoes, so this month dedicated to LGBT+ history is the perfect opportunity for us all to read widely. However, the news does not often ever say anything real or substantial about the complexity and strength of the human condition in crisis. The news, snapshots of each rough unpredictable day, steadily build to create a narrative for the media. Most of us are likely tired of hearing how the pandemic of the past year has been a historic event and surely are even more tired of the endless talk about the unclear future. The reader can also go through the same stages and feel empowered at the end. It is argued that as the central theme of the story is death, the writer has managed to guide the young protagonist of the story through different techniques of characterization, plot, setting, fantasy and pictures to come to terms with losing his mother to cancer. In this study A Monster Calls is analysed based on four types of empowerment. Fiction for young adults addresses subjects which people are faced with in everyday life and writers of such fiction try to make use of tangible topics to give a voice to children and young adult literature reducing their Otherness in order to pave the way for empowerment. The issue of power has always existed in literature and it also appears in children and young adult literature. Yet, this paper also suggests that through such an unyielding portrayal of white power, Perfidia only partly dislodges the authority and power of institutional whiteness, and can in fact be seen to validate the sustainment of such apparatus. As a result, this paper argues that novel " visibilizes " the socially and institutionally constructed nature of race, deconstructing and destabilizing the integrity and authority of white social power. Focusing on his novel Perfidia, this paper explores these contradictions and paradoxes in Ellroy's representations of race, arguing that whilst the novel depicts and forcefully overemphasizes an historical moment fraught with a brand of physiognomic racism that persecutes individuals on the basis of biological difference, it simultaneously deconstructs such essentialist engenderings by foregrounding the performative dimensions of race as a category of identity. Whilst some see the casual racism and often uncomfortable stereotypes in Ellroy's work as a reflection of the author's own political agenda, for others Ellroy's work offers a complex deconstruction of both racial identity and white social power. James Ellroy's treatment of race continues to captivate and polarize both popular and academic opinion.
